South Africa runs on SAST (UTC+2) with no clock changes
One zone covers the whole country: South Africa Standard Time, fixed at UTC+2. The IANA identifier is Africa/Johannesburg. No city switches, no province opts out. The offset has held steady since 1944, when a wartime DST experiment ended.
The National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) keeps the national time standard with atomic clocks and feeds those measurements into the global UTC network. NMISA broadcasts the official time via the SA Radio Time Signal and runs NTP servers for synchronised digital clocks.
No time difference between Johannesburg and Cape Town
Some visitors assume Johannesburg, the economic hub, might run on a different clock to Cape Town. It does not. The whole country is synchronised. A meeting set for 10:00 in Sandton is 10:00 at the V&A Waterfront.
| City | IANA Zone | Offset | DST? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg | Africa/Johannesburg | UTC+2 | No |
| Cape Town | Africa/Johannesburg | UTC+2 | No |
| Durban | Africa/Johannesburg | UTC+2 | No |
| Pretoria (capital) | Africa/Johannesburg | UTC+2 | No |
SAST vs neighbouring countries
Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, and Namibia (since 2017) all use UTC+2 year-round. No time difference at any border crossing.
Further north, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern DRC share the same offset. Several of those countries observe DST. Check the local date: Egypt, for example, switches to UTC+3 in summer.
Why the time gap to London and New York keeps shifting
South Africa never changes its clocks. The countries you compare it with do. That means the difference shrinks and widens twice a year.
On 15 January 2026, relative to Johannesburg: - New York: 7 hours behind - London: 2 hours behind - Paris: 1 hour behind
On 15 July 2026, relative to Johannesburg: - New York: 6 hours behind - London: 1 hour behind - Paris: same time
The most common scheduling error hits around the UK’s March and October clock changes. People assume a fixed 2-hour gap. For half the year it is 1 hour. See the Johannesburg vs London Time guide for exact windows.
How to check the official South African time
Three reliable methods:
1. NMISA NTP servers: use ntp.nmisa.org as your time source on any computer or server.
2. SA Radio Time Signal: broadcast on 5 MHz from the NMISA facility near Johannesburg; covers most of the country.
3. IANA zone Africa/Johannesburg: the canonical identifier used by all operating systems, programming languages, and devices. Set your device to this zone and it will never transition to DST.
