When Johannesburg and Cairo sit on the same hour

For much of the year, Johannesburg and Cairo share the same clock. Both use UTC+2 as their standard offset. But Cairo observes daylight saving time. Johannesburg does not.

That means:

  • From late October to late April: Cairo is on UTC+2, same as Johannesburg. Zero difference.
  • From late April to late October: Cairo moves to UTC+3. Johannesburg stays at UTC+2. Cairo is one hour ahead.

In 2026, Egypt's DST starts on the last Friday of April (25 April 2026) and ends on the last Thursday of October (29 October 2026). Mark those dates. They are the only two days in the year when the difference between the two cities changes.

Why Johannesburg stays on UTC+2 all year

South Africa tried daylight saving during World War II, 1942 to 1944, and then stopped. It has not changed its clocks since. The IANA time zone database records Africa/Johannesburg as a permanent UTC+2 zone. No DST transitions exist. No pending legislation as of 2026.

The result is stable: Johannesburg sunrise and sunset times shift gradually with the seasons, but the clock does not jump. On the June solstice (21 June 2026), the sun rises at 06:54 and sets at 17:23-10 hours 30 minutes of daylight. On the December solstice (21 December 2026), sunrise is at 05:12, sunset at 18:59, giving 13 hours 47 minutes. The same clock. The same offset. Every day.

Why Cairo jumps forward in April

Egypt has a long, interrupted history with DST. It was reintroduced in 2014, cancelled in 2015, then brought back in 2023. As of 2026, the rule is: clocks go forward one hour on the last Friday of April, and back on the last Thursday of October.

That means Cairo's time zone is effectively Africa/Cairo with a DST flag. In winter, it matches Johannesburg. In summer, it pulls ahead.

How to schedule a Johannesburg, Cairo call without getting it wrong

If you are scheduling a call between Johannesburg and Cairo:

25 April 2026 to 29 October 2026
Cairo is one hour ahead. When it is 09:00 in Johannesburg, it is 10:00 in Cairo. Your 10:00 Johannesburg meeting is 11:00 Cairo. Best overlap for a standard workday: 09:00-15:00 Johannesburg time (10:00-16:00 Cairo time).

30 October 2026 to 24 April 2027
No difference. 09:00 in Johannesburg is 09:00 in Cairo. Any time works.

The tricky weeks are the transition weeks. On 25 April 2026, Cairo jumps forward. On 29 October 2026, it jumps back. If you have a recurring meeting, check it on those two dates.

When Johannesburg and Cairo are the same, and when they are not

A quick reference for the 2026-2027 cycle:

Period Difference Johannesburg time → Cairo time
30 Oct 2025-24 Apr 2026 0 hours Same
25 Apr 2026-29 Oct 2026 +1 hour Add 1 hour
30 Oct 2026-24 Apr 2027 0 hours Same
25 Apr 2027 onwards +1 hour Add 1 hour

How Cairo compares to cities you already know

If you already know the time difference between Johannesburg and other cities, you can use them as a reference for Cairo.

  • On 15 January 2026 (when Cairo is on standard time): Johannesburg is 1 hour behind Paris, 2 hours behind London, 7 hours behind New York. Cairo matches Johannesburg exactly.
  • On 15 July 2026 (when Cairo is on DST): Johannesburg is the same as Paris, 1 hour behind London, 6 hours behind New York. Cairo is 1 hour ahead of Johannesburg, so Cairo is 1 hour ahead of Paris, same as London.

The rule: during northern summer, Cairo time = Paris time = London summer time. During northern winter, Cairo time = Johannesburg time = Paris winter time.

Flying from Johannesburg to Cairo: what changes and what doesn’t

Flying from OR Tambo International (JNB) to Cairo International (CAI) takes roughly 7 to 8 hours. If you fly in northern winter, you land at the same clock time you left. If you fly in northern summer, you land one hour later by the clock than you would expect.

Jet lag is minimal: the one-hour difference is barely noticeable. The real adjustment is the change in daylight length. Cairo at 30°N has shorter winter days and longer summer days than Johannesburg at 26°S. On the December solstice, Cairo gets about 10 hours of daylight; Johannesburg gets nearly 14. Pack accordingly.

When Cairo next changes its clocks, and what to do about it

The next time Cairo changes its clocks is 29 October 2026. On that Friday, at 00:00 Cairo time, clocks go back one hour. Cairo returns to UTC+2.

If you have a meeting scheduled for 29 October 2026, check which side of the transition it falls on. A 10:00 Cairo meeting before the change is 09:00 Johannesburg. After the change, it is 10:00 Johannesburg. Same clock, different difference.

After 29 October 2026, the two cities are in sync until 28 April 2027, the last Friday of April. Mark it now. You will not need to think about the difference again until then.
